Avery Peterson had two goals and an assist to lead the Omaha hockey team to a 4-1 win over Colorado College on Saturday night at World Arena.
The win gave the Mavericks a split of the weekend series after losing 4-3 on Friday. They improved to 15-6-3 overall and 9-4-1-1 in the NCHC, strengthening their hold on first place to four points ahead of Minnesota Duluth. Colorado College fell to 5-14-1 and 1-9-1-0 in the NCHC.
The Mavericks had three power plays in the first period but were held without a goal. The Tigers scored just 18 seconds after a successful kill. Luc Gerdes drove the Mavericks' net for the initial shot.
Ryan Massa made the save, but Scott Wamsganz hammered home the rebound for his fourth goal of the year.
Massa, making his first start since Dec. 13, limited the scoring in the first, making a point-blank save on Hunter Fejes late in CC's only power play of the period.
The Mavericks tied the game at 12:32 of the second when
David Pope created a turnover along the end boards and centered to Peterson who fired home his second goal of the weekend.
Peterson put the Mavericks in the lead late in the period.
Joel Messner threw the puck to the front of the CC net. Peterson was able to knock the bouncing puck over goaltender Chase Perry, just barely crossing the goal line. After a video review, the goal was confirmed.
In the third, the Mavericks stretched their lead when Peterson carried the puck down the left wing and from behind the goal line centered to
Tanner Lane. Lane kicked the puck to his stick and swept it past Perry as he fell for his second goal of the year at 1:48. It was his first goal since Oct. 17 at Western Michigan.
Austin Ortega scored his team-leading 14th goal of the year into an empty net at 18:28.
Massa improved to 10-3-3 with 27 saves. It was his first start since Dec. 13 against St. Cloud State. Perry made 10 saves in the loss. The Mavericks were outshot 28-14 in the game.
The Mavericks improved to 3-0-1 all-time in the second game of a weekend series at Colorado College.
Following a week off, the Mavericks are home to host North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30-31.
