Mavericks Fall at Colorado College, 4-3

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Omaha hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision to Colorado College on Friday night in its first road game in more than a month.

The Mavericks fell to 14-6-3 overall and in spite of the setback remained in first place in the NCHC with a record of 8-4-1-1, one point ahead of Minnesota Duluth.  The Tigers improved to 5-13-1 overall and earned their first win in conference play (1-8-1-0).

With the game tied at two, the Tigers got a power play just 40 seconds into the third period.  Sam Rothstein knocked in a pass from Scott Wamsganz just 13 seconds later to put CC ahead.

Hunter Fejes stretched the Tigers' lead to 4-2 when he fired home an unassisted goal, his second tally of the night, at 10:20.

The Mavericks drew to within a goal on the power play with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the game.  Jake Guentzel fired a pass from Luc Snuggerud that was tipped home by Avery Peterson for his seventh goal of the season.  The goal came with goaltender Kirk Thompson pulled for an extra attacker.

But CC goaltender Tyler Marble made several saves in the closing seconds to preserve the win.  He finished with 26 stops.

The loss kept the Mavericks winless on Fridays in four trips to Colorado Springs all-time.  They were shorthanded for a five-minute stretch just five and a half minutes into the game when Brian O'Rourke was send off on an interference major.  CC got a goal from Jaccob Slavin just 33 seconds into the power play to take a 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks responded late in the first period.  Working a perfect passing play out of the UNO zone, Jake Randolph carried the puck down the left wing and slid it across to Ian Brady who whipped a wrist shot past Marble for his fourth goal of the year.  Tyler Vesel also assisted.

Omaha seized its first lead of the game at 6:06 of the second period.  Justin Parizek set up Vesel who walked in, faked Marble down and then reached back and slid the puck just inside the left post for his fifth goal of the season.

The lead lasted just 1:22 before Fejes tied the game with a shot from the low slot that made it under Thompson.

The game marked the first on the road for the Mavericks since Dec. 6 at Miami.

The series concludes on Saturday night with an 8:07 p.m. CT face-off.
