Seniors Lead Mavericks Past Tigers in OT, 2-1

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Michael Young capped Senior Weekend by scoring the overtime game-winning goal as the Omaha hockey team edged Colorado College, 2-1, on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.

The Maverick senior captain's first goal of the season helped the Mavericks sweep the Tigers and improve to 15-15-2 overall and 12-8-2-1 in the NCHC, good for third place.  The Tigers dropped to 6-20-6 and 6-11-5-1 in league play, putting them in seventh.

Three seniors combined on the game-winning goal.  Brock Montpetit outworked a Tiger defender behind the net and centered a pass to Ryan Walters.  Walters was checked and the puck ricocheted to Young who fired a shot over CC goaltender Josh Thorimbert.

The goal ended a close-checking game as the Tigers tried to keep the Mavericks' high-powered offense under wraps following a 6-0 UNO win on Friday.

Both Thorimbert, who made 35 saves, and UNO's Ryan Massa, who had 26, made several good saves to keep the game tied for more than two periods.

The Tigers turned the tables on the Mavericks to start the first period.  One night after surrendering the first goal of the game 11 seconds in, the Tigers opened the scoring when Charlie Taft wristed a sharp-angle shot over Massa's shoulder at 35 seconds.

The Mavericks tied the game during the second power play of the game.  Montpetit dug the puck out of a scrum at the left wing.  He passed to Young who fired a shot just wide of the left post.  But Jake Guentzel scooped up the rebound off the end boards and flipped it past Thorimbert for his sixth goal of the year and second of the weekend at 11:40.

Montpetit finished the weekend with a goal and four assists while Young had a goal and two assists.

UNO evened its home record to 9-9-0 with the sweep.

The Mavericks close the regular season at Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday, March 7-8.  UNO's magic number for clinching home ice for the first round of the playoffs is one over both Minnesota Duluth and Western Michigan.
