Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Denver beat the Omaha hockey team, 2-0, on Saturday night to win the National Collegiate Hockey Conference best-of-three quarterfinal series two games to one.
The loss ended the season for the Mavericks who finished 17-18-2 overall. Denver, which improved to 18-15-6, moves on to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff in Minneapolis next week.
Ty Loney scored his 10th goal of the year when he flipped the puck past UNO goalie
Ryan Massa for the game winner at 6:16 of the third period.
Zac Larraza then scored into an empty net from 150 feet away at 18:09 to seal the game and cap the comeback for the Pioneers who lost the first game of the series, 4-3, on Thursday.
Over the final two games, Denver limited the Mavericks to just one goal, thanks in large part to the goaltending of Sam Brittain who made 34 saves on Saturday night. The Mavericks were shutout for the first time this season in their final game.
The Mavericks outshot the Pioneers 26-15 through two periods and had their best chances to open the scoring in the second period, getting breakaways from both
Aaron Pearce and
Johnnie Searfoss. Both times, Brittain made pad saves to deny them.
With the loss, Omaha fell to 3-4 all-time in game three of a conference playoff series, and it marked just the second time it had lost a three-game series after winning the first game.
