Mavericks Complete Sweep of Ohio State, 4-3

Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Justin Parizek capped a comeback from two goals down as the Omaha hockey team beat Ohio State, 4-3, on Saturday night at Value City Arena.

Avery Peterson had two goals and an assist for the Mavericks who capped a six-game road swing with a 5-0-1 record.  They are now 6-1-1 this season while the Buckeyes fell to 2-5-1.

On the game winner, Parizek and linemates Tyler Vesel and Jake Randolph worked the puck around the Ohio State net.  Randolph eventually slid the puck in front, and Parizek flipped it over OSU goalie Christian Frey for his second goal of the weekend and third of the year.

The Mavericks, road-weary after three straight road trips to the Eastern time zone, held on down the stretch.  The Buckeyes' best chance to tie the game came in the last second while on the power play and Frey pulled for a 6-on-4 advantage.  Kirk Thompson made a pad save on Darik Angeli to preserve the win.

The first period provided plenty of offense.  Ohio State got its first lead of the weekend when Tanner Fritz roofed a wrist shot over Thompson at 4:05.

Just 57 seconds later, Peterson tied the game when he took a pass from Ian Brady, skated down the left wing and fired a shot to the top corner past Frey.

The goal barrage continued as the Buckeyes retook the lead one minute later.  Chad Niddery walked unimpeded off the right wing wall and fired a backhander past Thompson who had been knocked down in the crease.  After a video review, the goal was upheld.

Ohio State stretched its lead to 3-1 when Angeli pounced on the rebound of a shot by Nick Schilkey for a powerplay goal at 16:11.

Peterson went to work just 1:46 later to trim the lead.  Brian O'Rourke threw a pinpoint pass up ice that sprang Peterson for a breakaway.  He zipped a shot through Frey's five hole for his fourth goal in the last three games.

David Pope's first collegiate goal tied the game midway through the second.  Peterson dug the puck out of the right corner to Pope in the slot.  He got off a shot on a rolling puck that fluttered past Frey at 11:07.

Thompson stopped 27 shots for his first win of the year.  Frey made 26 in the loss.  Randolph had two assists in the game to finish with four for the weekend.  All four goals and six of the seven assists awarded to UNO in the game were earned by freshmen or sophomores.

The Mavericks return home following a bye week to host Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22.  They will be UNO's first home games in five weeks.
