Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio –
Brian Cooper and Avery Peterson each had a goal and assist to lead the Omaha hockey team to a 4-1 win over Ohio State on Friday night at Value City Arena.
The Mavericks improved to 5-1-1 overall and ran their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1) with their first win at Ohio State since Nov. 9, 2007 when both teams played in the CCHA. The Buckeyes fell to 2-4-1 this season.
With the Mavericks leading 2-0 entering the third period, Ohio State trimmed the lead at 6:32 when Matt Johnson was able to flip the puck over UNO goalie
Ryan Massa with heavy traffic in front of the net.
But UNO responded less than three minutes later. While on the power play,
Tyler Vesel set up Peterson who walked down the left wing and rifled a shot over the shoulder of OSU goalie Matt Tomkins. The puck clanged in off the crossbar for his second goal of the season.
Ohio State coach and former Maverick assistant Steve Rohlik pulled Tomkins for an extra attacker with more than three minutes remaining in the game, but the move backfired when
Ian Brady fired the puck into the empty net from behind the UNO goal line. The 180-foot goal was his second of the year.
The Mavericks worked a pretty passing play for their first goal of the game. Vesel fed
Justin Parizek who used an Ohio State defenseman as a screen to zip a wrist shot past Tomkins at 15:05 of the first period.
Jake Randolph also picked up an assist.
Ohio State had a good chance to tie the game early in the second period when Anthony Greco got free in front of the crease, but Massa gloved his hard wrist shot to preserve the lead.
Late in the period, the Mavericks added to their advantage during a power play. Cooper fired a shot from the top of the slot that banked off the right post past Tomkins. It was UNO's first powerplay goal since Cooper scored at Western Michigan on Oct. 17, a span of 19 chances.
Vesel and Randolph each finished the game with two assists.
Massa remained unbeaten this season, improving to 5-0-1 with the 25-save effort. Tomkins stopped 15 in the loss as the Mavericks were outshot 26-19.
The series concludes on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. CT.
