Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. –
Tyler Vesel scored his first collegiate goal as the Omaha hockey team forged a 1-1 tie with No. 18 Cornell on Friday night at Lynah Rink.
The Mavericks are now 3-1-1 on the season while Cornell, playing in its season opener, is 0-0-1.
Cornell broke the deadlock late in the first period. Matt Buckles' shot from the top of the left face-off circle hit the right post and ricocheted in for a powerplay goal at 17:49.
The Mavericks tied the game early in the second. Cornell turned over the puck at the UNO blue line, setting in motion a 2-on-1 for Vesel and
Jake Randolph. Vesel crashed the net and finished off a pass from Randolph at 4:58.
Omaha benefited from two video reviews, both of which overruled apparent goals by the Big Red including one where goaltender
Ryan Massa's mask was knocked off just before the puck was put in the net.
Massa remained undefeated this season, stopping 29 shots to improve to 3-0-1. Cornell's Mitch Gillam stopped 38 shots as UNO held a 39-30 shot advantage.
The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.
