Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Freshman Natalie Johnson scored her first collegiate goal in the Omaha women's soccer team's 2-0 Summit League victory over South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon at Caniglia Field. The win improved the Mavericks' record to 4-9-2 overall and 2-0-2 in conference play.
“We were very happy with the result,” Head Coach Don Klosterman said. “I thought our second half was some of the best soccer we have had this season.”
Senior Anna Sibson opened the scoring in the 57th minute. Kyla Booker played a ball from the right flank into the 18-yard box to Sibson who fired a shot past SDSU goalkeeper Elisa Stamatakis. The goal was the third of the season for Sibson.
Omaha's insurance goal came from Natalie Johnson in the 75th minute. Johnson fired a 25-yard shot that beat Stamatakis to put Omaha up 2-0. Chelsi Rohloff was credited with the assist on the goal.
South Dakota State looked to have a sure goal in the 77th minute. Diana Potterveld's shot off a corner kick looked to find side netting, but was cleared off the line by defender Lauren Lawler. Omaha goalkeeper Haley Shelton made two big saves in the 83rd minute. Shelton first made a dynamic save on Dani Patterson's free kick, before knocking Sydney Tobin's follow-up shot out of bounds before it could cross the goal line.
SDSU outshot Omaha 13-9 on the afternoon and held an 8-4 margin in shots on goal. Chelsi Rohloff led Omaha with three shots on the afternoon. Nyoke Dumba added two shots.
Maverick goalkeeper Haley Shelton made seven saves as she improved to 3-7-2 on the season. Shelton earned her second shut-out on the season.
Omaha returns to action on Friday, Oct. 24, hosting Fort Wayne for a 7 p.m. match at Caniglia Field.
