Minnesota State Stops Mavericks, 4-2

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – No. 11/13 Minnesota State scored four goals in the second period and held off the Omaha hockey team, 4-2, on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.

The two teams split the season-opening series with UNO winning 5-3 on Friday.  Based on total goals, the Mavericks held on to the Spirit of the Maverick trophy, the traditional reward for winning the season series contested by the NCAA's two teams with the Maverick nickname.

The Mavericks took the early lead on Jake Randolph's first collegiate goal.  He finished off a pretty passing play, knocking in a pass from Jono Davis at 5:10 of the first period.  Tanner Lane picked up the other assist.

UNO doubled the lead less than six minutes later.  Dominic Zombo and Austin Ortega worked the puck behind the Minnesota State, eventually finding Jake Guentzel alone in front.  He one-timed home his second goal of the year at 11:07.

Minnesota State took control in the second period, scoring four goals to take a 4-2 lead.  Bryce Gervais scored at 4:01, and Zach Palmquist scored during a 5-on-3 power play.  Brad McClure and Chase Grant then scored 2:25 apart late in the period to make it 4-2.

Minnesota State limited the Mavericks to just three shots in the third period, squelching any chance at a comeback.  MSU finished with a 34-13 shot advantage.

UNO's Kirk Thompson made 30 saves in the loss.  Cole Huggins of Minnesota State started the game and gave up both UNO goals on four shots in just 11:07.  Stephon Williams entered the game after UNO's second goal and stopped all 10 shots he faced in almost 49 minutes of work..

The Mavericks will play three straight road series before returning home.  They begin NCHC play at Western Michigan next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18.
