Austin Ortega had two goals and an assist and
Jake Guentzel had a goal and three assists to power the Omaha hockey team to a 5-3 season-opening win over No. 11/13 Minnesota State on Friday night.
The win improved the Mavericks' record to 10-6-2 in season openers all-time.
With UNO leading 3-2 entering the third, Minnesota State tied it on a two-on-one break at 5:31. Dylan Margonari skated down the left wing and passed across to Brad McClure who was streaking down the slot, and he one-timed the pass past Massa.
But just 62 seconds later, Ortega struck for the second time for the game winner. On the power play, Guentzel threw the puck from the right wing to
Brian Cooper at the top of the slot. Cooper quickly slid the puck across to Ortega at the left wing, and he fired a shot past Huggins to complete a 3-for-7 night on the man advantage for UNO.
Dominic Zombo scored into an empty net with 21 seconds to play in the game to ice it.
Minnesota State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Just 44 seconds into the game, defenseman Zach Palmquist stepped down the slot and fired home a pass from Bryce Gervais.
The Mavericks tied the game on
Luc Snuggerud's first collegiate goal.
Tanner Lane dug the puck off the wall and centered to Snuggerud who zipped a shot over MSU goalie Cole Huggins at 12:04.
UNO got its first lead of the game less than four minutes later. While on the power play, Ortega picked up a loose puck and wheeled in the slot for a shot that hit the post. Guentzel scooped up the rebound and tucked it past Huggins before he could recover.
The Mavericks stretched their lead on a power play early in the second. Snuggerud carried the puck down the left wing and threw a pass in front that bounced off Ortega's skate and inside the right post.
Minnesota State used the power play to draw to within one before the end of the period. Casey Nelson's shot from the right point was stopped by
Ryan Massa, but it bounced off of
Brian O'Rourke and trickled over the goal line at 15:13.
Massa stopped 22 saves to pick up the win while Huggins made 17 stops.
The two teams conclude the series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
