Archibald's Hat Trick Powers Mavs Past Miami, 5-1

Box Score OXFORD, Ohio – Josh Archibald had a hat trick as the Omaha hockey team erupted for three goals in the third period to beat Miami, 5-1, on Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena.

The win snapped a seven-game winless streak for the Mavericks who improved to 9-11-2 overall and 6-4-2-1 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, putting them in a tie with Denver and North Dakota for second place.

Miami, which went 0-3-1 against the Mavs with a shootout win in the four-game season series, dropped to 9-10-3 overall and 3-8-0-1 in the NCHC, good for seventh place.

Leading 2-1 in the third period, the Mavericks went on a five-minute power play when Miami's Jimmy Mullin was penalized for boarding Johnnie Searfoss at 8:53.

On the ensuing power play, Archibald scored his second goal of the game when he fired home a pass from Jake Guentzel at 9:36.

Just 23 seconds later, Austin Ortega redirected in a feed from Ryan Walters for his second goal of the weekend and sixth of the season.

Miami's Kevin Morris was then given a roughing penalty to put the Mavs up, 5-on-3.  With just seconds remaining on the two-man advantage, Archibald finished the hat trick, one-timing a pass from Walters for his NCHC-leading 17th goal of the season.

UNO finished 3-for-7 on the power play while holding the RedHawks without a goal in seven chances.  The Mavs killed off all 13 Miami power plays for the weekend and have now stopped 20 in a row.

For the second straight night, Miami struck first when Devin Loe poked in the puck during a net-mouth scramble at 1:24 of the second period.

The Mavericks tied the game at 12:15 of the period.  Ian Brady threw a long-range shot on goal.  Miami netminder Jay Williams juggled the puck, allowing Dominic Zombo to steal it and feed Archibald who fired home his first goal in four games.

The Mavs then got their first lead of the weekend a little more than three minutes later.  Brian Cooper's shot from the point was tipped over Williams' shoulder by Searfoss for his fourth goal of the season.

UNO goaltender Ryan Massa made 25 saves to improve to 6-5-1 on the year while Williams stopped 23 in dropping to 3-4-0.

Archibald's hat trick was the first for UNO this season.  He also had the Mavs' last hat trick on Jan. 4, 2013 against Colorado College.  Zombo and Walters each finished the game with two assists.

The Mavericks have next week off before hosting league-leading St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
