Box Score OXFORD, Ohio – The Omaha hockey team fought back from a two-goal deficit to forge a 2-2 tie with Miami on Friday night at Cady Arena. Miami won a seven-round shootout, 3-2, to earn an extra standings point.
The tie extended the Mavericks' winless streak to seven games (0-5-2). They are now 8-11-2 overall and 5-4-2-1 in the NCHC. Miami is 9-9-3 overall and 3-7-1-1 in conference play.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the third period, the Mavericks tied the game when
Austin Ortega knocked in a pass from
Jaycob Megna at 7:02 for a powerplay goal.
The Mavericks weathered three straight penalty kills in the third period and overtime to force the shootout. The Mavs got shootout goals from
Josh Archibald and
Nick Seeler, but Miami countered with scores from Austin Czarnik, Cody Murphy and Sean Kuraly in the seventh round. UNO's
Michael Young had a shot in the seventh but was stopped by goaltender Ryan McKay to end it.
Like their game last Saturday against Minnesota Duluth, the Mavericks had the edge in several categories. They outshot Miami, 27-13, tying a season low for shots allowed in a game.
The Mavs also stopped all six Miami power plays and have now killed 13 straight opponent advantages. In addition, they enjoyed a 37-28 edge in face offs.
Miami opened the scoring at 10:13 of the first period. Anthony Louis curled behind the Mavericks' net and threw the puck out to Bryon Paulazzo who fired it past UNO goalie
Ryan Massa before he could get across.
The RedHawks doubled their lead at 9:11 of the second period when Czarnik took a pass from John Doherty and whipped a wrist shot just inside the left post.
The Mavericks countered just 42 seconds later.
Jake Guentzel and
Austin Ortega worked the puck off the end wall to the slot where
Brock Montpetit deflected the puck over McKay for his eighth goal of the season.
Massa made 11 saves and is now 5-5-1 on the season while McKay stopped 25 and is 6-6-3.
The two teams conclude the series on Saturday at 6:07 p.m. CT.
