Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Minnesota Duluth goaltender Aaron Crandall stopped 52 shots, propping up the Bulldogs in a 3-1 win over the Omaha hockey team on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.
The Bulldogs earned their first sweep of the season to improve to 9-8-1 overall and 5-5-0 in the NCHC while the Mavericks dipped to 8-11-1 overall and 5-4-1-1 in the league while losing their fourth straight game.
With UMD holding a 3-0 lead late in the third, Crandall looked to be en route to a shutout in spite of the fact that the Mavericks finished the game with a 53-13 edge in shots. But
Brian Cooper sprung
Jake Guentzel with a pass up ice, and the Maverick freshman weaved his way through UMD defenders before sliding home a backhander at 16:10.
The Mavericks continued to press with their best chance at a second goal coming when
Josh Archibald rang the crossbar with about 30 seconds remaining in the game. UNO's
Dominic Zombo and
Ryan Walters also hit a post each earlier in the game.
For the second night in a row, the Bulldogs scored first. Austin Farley threw a pass to the slot from behind the Mavericks' net, and Joe Basaraba fired it home at 12:24.
UMD doubled its lead at 7:20 of the second period. Austin Farley and Caleb Herbert worked a nifty give-and-go at the UNO blue line. Herbert got loose and beat goalie
Kirk Thompson who had sprawled across the crease.
Midway through the third, Basaraba tallied again, poking home a pass from Herbert who had slipped behind the Maverick defense to make it 3-0.
Thompson suffered the loss with 10 saves and is now 3-4-1 on the season. Crandall, who finished the weekend with 90 saves, improved to 7-5-0.
The Mavericks are on the road next week to visit Miami on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 17-18.
