NEWARK, N.J. - Incoming freshman forward
Jake Guentzel was chosen in the third round of the National Hockey League entry draft today, a pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Guentzel was selected with the 77th overall pick and becomes the sixth member of this year's UNO team to be drafted by an NHL team. He is also the second Pittsburgh pick on the Mavericks' roster, following
Josh Archibald who was chosen in the sixth round in 2011.
Guentzel was named the USHL Rookie of the Year and a member of the league's All-Rookie Team in his first and only year with Sioux City of the United States Hockey League in 2012-13. He led the team with 29 goals and 44 assists for 73 points and 24 penalty minutes while tallying 11 powerplay goals and three game winners
He finished sixth in USHL scoring and ranked fourth in powerplay goals. The native of Woodbury, Minn. had a 21-game point streak to tie a USHL Tier 1 era record. Prior to junior hockey Guentzel was an All-Conference and All-State selection for Hill-Murray Academy as a junior in high school, finishing the season with 74 points. He led the Pioneers to a runner-up finish in the 2012 Minnesota State Tournament.
Guentzel was born in Omaha while his dad, Mike, was coaching the Omaha Lancers. Mike later served as an assistant coach at UNO during the 2010-11 season.
Jake Guentzel has two brothers, Ryan and Gabe, who both played college hockey, Ryan at Notre Dame and Gabe at Colorado College.
