OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO softball team swept its Alumni Day doubleheader with IUPUI on Saturday, 4-0 and 5-2, at Westside Field at Westbrook.
The Mavericks improved to 29-5 overall and 7-1 in The Summit League. IUPUI fell to 15-21 overall and 5-9 in conference play. Omaha is now 5-0 at home this season.
The series wraps up Sunday at Noon.
Omaha 4, IUPUI 0
Dana Elsasser (17-5) pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout to lead the Mavs to the win in the series opener. Elsasser struck out six and walked none.
The Mavs outhit the Jaguars 7-3 with five of the seven hits going for extra bases.
Campbell Ditto got things going in the bottom of the first with a two-out double.
Amber Lutmer singled her home for a 1-0 lead.
Allie Mathewson tripled to lead off the third inning and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
With two outs gone in the sixth, Lutmer doubled to left field.
Molly Negrete then doubled her home and later scored on an RBI single by
Tonya Peterson.
Sydney Hames followed with a double to left field, but the inning ended with Peterson getting thrown out at the plate trying to extend the 4-0 lead. Nevertheless, it was more than enough run support for Elsasser.
Lutmer was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Omaha 5, IUPUI 2
Allie Mathewson hit a tiebreaking three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Mavericks the 5-2 lead.
Ashton Hughes finished out the complete game in the top of the seventh to improve to 8-0 in the circle. Hughes allowed six hits, two earned runs, three walks and struck out five.
IUPUI got off on the right foot when Alicia Brewer hit a solo home run in the top of the second to put the Jaguars up 1-0.
But
Campbell Ditto hit a two-run homer to left field to give the Mavs a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Ditto's fifth homer of the season scored Mathewson, who had singled to start the inning.
The Jaguars evened the score at 2-2 on an RBI single by Kelsey Rupert to score Alyssa Neff from third in the top of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Sydney Hames hit a one-out infield single and was replaced by pinch-runner
Tania Carroll. With two outs gone,
Lindsay Redding reached first and moved Carroll to second on a short grounder that was bobbled by the third baseman. Mathewson then cranked her 10th homer of the season over the wall in right center for the final margin.
Mathewson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Ditto was 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs.
Tara Trede and Hames each had two hits.
