Box Score Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. – Minnesota Duluth scored five powerplay goals and shutout the Omaha hockey team, 6-0 on Saturday night, denying the Mavericks a chance at home ice advantage in the WCHA Playoffs.

The Mavericks were shutout for the first time on the final night of the regular season and now have a record 18-16-2 overall and 14-12-2 in the WCHA.  They'll enter the playoffs as the seventh seed and will play at Minnesota State if Denver beats Alaska Anchorage on Sunday.  If DU loses or ties, the Mavs will travel to Denver.

The Bulldogs got the only goal they would need midway through the first.  Mike Seidel set up Austin Farley for the backdoor play at 9:56.

The power play again paid dividends for UMD later in the period.  Cal Decowski rattled in a shot off the post for his third goal of the year, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

UMD's power play kept rolling in the second period.  Joe Basaraba scored with the man advantage at 7:53, and Andy Welinski tallied on another power play at 19:13 to put the Bulldogs up, 4-0, after two.

The Mavs got few breaks in the middle stanza.  They outshot UMD 15-5 but hit two posts in the period.

Basaraba scored his second of the night at 5:59 of the third, and Mike Seidel had the game's only even-strength goal at 14:19.

Ryan Massa took the loss, surrendering four goals on 17 shots.  John Faulkner, who played the third, made eight saves on 10 shots.

UMD's Aaron Crandall earned his second straight shutout with 32 saves as the Mavs outshot the Bulldogs, 32-27.
