OMAHA, Neb. -
Allie Mathewson's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th scored
Lindsay Redding from second base to give the UNO softball team a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Westside Field at Westbrook.
The Mavs are now 25-4 on the season and 3-0 in Summit League play with the series sweep. South Dakota State fell to 9-18 overall and 1-5 in The Summit League.
Dana Elsasser and Kori Seidlitz engaged in a pitcher's duel all day. Both teams had just one hit through five innings - a bunt single by
Molly Negrete in the second and a dribbler that went 10 feet down the third base line by Alex Landon in the fourth.
SDSU threatened in the top of the sixth, putting runners on second and first with one out via a hit by pitch and a Maverick throwing error. But Elsasser struck out pinch-hitter Vanessa Kellems and got Landon to ground to
Tara Trede to force out Devon Reick at second base to end the jam.
Mathewson reached first to lead off the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trede. But
Campbell Ditto and
Amber Lutmer flied out to center and left field, respectively, to end the inning.
Elsasser retired the Jackrabbits in order in the top of the seventh, aided by a diving catch by Redding in right field to end the half inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Negrete roped a single to center field to start the inning, and
Sydney Hames sacrifice bunted her to second.
Tonya Peterson hit a soft grounder to the shortstop, and she bobbled the ball as Negrete advanced to third and Peterson reached first safely, still with one out. But Seidlitz forced two groundouts to get out of the inning.
The teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the 10th. Redding led off with a walk and stole second on the first pitch to Mathewson. Mathewson then lined one up the middle and Redding touched home plate as the catcher received the throw from center field.
The Mavs finished with four hits, two from Negrete. Elsasser (15-4) allowed just two hits and picked up her eighth shutout of the season. She fanned a career-high 11 batters in her longest outing as a Maverick and walked none. Seidlitz (5-12) took the loss despite allowing just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
The Mavericks are back at home on Monday to host North Dakota in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m.
