Tonya Peterson hit the go-ahead two-run single in the top of the eighth inning, and the UNO softball team finished off Colorado State for a 3-2 win on Saturday at the Colorado State Classic.
The Mavs, now 16-1 on the season, picked up their eighth win in a row and are a perfect 3-0 at the tournament. The Mavs finish play against Brown and No. 18 Washington tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
Each team scored one run in the first inning.
Lindsay Redding scored on a double steal, and Colorado State on an RBI double by Shae Rodriguez. But the rest of the game turned into a pitcher's duel between UNO's
Dana Elsasser and CSU's Kacie McCarthy.
The game went to international rules in extra innings, putting a runner at second base with no outs.
Campbell Ditto was placed on second, and
Amber Lutmer drew a walk.
Molly Negrete sacrifice bunted them over one base, and Peterson singled them both home before being thrown out trying to advance to second. But the damage was done, and UNO led 3-1 heading to the bottom half.
Ashlie Ortega was placed on second for the Rams (8-10) and advanced to third on a groundout. Rodriguez popped up in the infield, but Ortega scored with two outs on a single by Alysa Greckel. But pinch-runner Haley David came on for Greckel and was called for leaving first base early for the third out to end the game.
Elsasser (10-1) allowed one earned run on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. McCarthy (5-5) took the loss, giving up one earned run on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Peterson finished 2-for-4 with her two RBIs. Five other Mavs had one hit, including Redding, who singled and stole two bases.
