Box Score
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The UNO softball team capped a perfect weekend and claimed the Tennessee State Classic title with a 2-0 win over Mississippi Valley on Sunday morning.
The Mavericks (22-2) were a perfect 5-0 on the weekend and outscored their opponents 33-1. UNO pitched shutouts in four of its five games to capture its third tournament title in its fifth and final tournament this season.
Dana Elsasser (12-2) earned her third shutout in three starts this weekend with a dominating performance against the Devilettes (7-14). Elsasser allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out six batters.
UNO scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Tara Trede reached on a single, and
Allie Mathewson tripled her home for a 1-0 lead. Mathewson later scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
The Mavs outhit the Devilettes 5-2 on the day but found themselves in danger in the top of the seventh inning. A single, a Maverick error and a hit by pitch from Elsasser had the bases loaded with Devilletes with just one out. But Jahcenda Garrett lined out to
Tonya Peterson at shortstop, and Peterson quickly threw to first base to double off Natalia Covarrubias to end the game.
In addition to Mathewson and Trede,
Lindsay Redding,
Campbell Ditto and
Molly Negrete (double) all had hits for the Mavericks.
UNO is scheduled to play Nebraska on Tuesday at Westside Field at Westbrook at 5 p.m., but Sunday's snowstorm that rolled through the eastern part of the state has put that in question. Stay tuned to OMavs.com for the latest details. The Mavs are also scheduled to begin Summit League play next weekend at home against North Dakota State on Friday at 2 and 4 p.m., and on Saturday at Noon.
