ANCHORAGE, Alaska –
Johnnie Searfoss scored his second goal of the game with 32 seconds remaining in overtime to push the Omaha hockey team past Alaska Anchorage, 6-5, on Saturday night at Sullivan Arena.
The win helped the Mavericks sweep the Seawolves and improve to 18-12-2 overall and 14-8-2 in the WCHA, good for sole possession of second place. It was UNO's sixth series sweep of the season, tying a school record. It also was the Mavs' first overtime win of the season (1-1-2).
On the winning goal, Searfoss was headed off for a line change, but
Brent Gwidt forced a turnover at the Seawolves' blue line. They combined to work it behind the net, and then Gwidt threw it in front to Matt White. Instead of shooting, White passed across the crease to Searfoss who fired home his career-best 10th goal of the year.
The Mavericks never led in the game until the overtime winner. They trailed 4-3 entering the third period, but Searfoss tied the game just 1:09 in when he knocked in another netmouth pass from White.
Alaska Anchorage, which went 4-for-6 on the power play, retook the lead when Matt Bailey notched his seventh goal of the year, converting a pass from Alex Gellert at 6:11.
UNO tallied on its last of six power plays to retie the game at 16:33. With goaltender
John Faulkner off for an extra attacker giving the Mavs a 6-on-4 advantage, White threaded a pass to
Josh Archibald who zipped a shot over the blocker hand of goalie Rob Gunderson.
Faulkner picked up his 53rd career win by stopping 14 shots. He is now tied with Dan Ellis for the UNO school record for career wins.
UAA took the lead midway through the first period. With the teams skating four-on-four, Quinn Sproule fired a shot from the left point. The shot missed wide, but the puck took an odd carom off the end boards to Blake Tatchell who fired a shot just inside the post for his eighth goal of the year.
The Seawolves doubled their lead just 33 seconds into the second period when Blake Leask took a shot from the point that beat starting goalie
Dayn Belfour for a powerplay goal.
James Polk got the Mavericks on the board at 2:45 when he slipped in the rebound of a shot by
Bryce Aneloski for his third goal of the year.
But UAA countered on another power play. Derek Docken got off a shot from the right point that found the net behind Belfour. The goal spelled the end of the night for Belfour who made eight saves on 11 shots.
UNO tied the game with goals just one minute apart. First, Gwidt banged in the rebound of his own shot for his career high seventh goal of the season. Then,
Ryan Walters took a pass from Archibald and rifled home his team-leading 19th goal of the year to make it 3-3.
But on yet another power play, Leask got his second of the game and his career to give the Seawolves the advantage after two.
UNO finished with a 37-27 shot advantage, including a 3-0 edge in overtime.
White tied a school record with four assists in the game to lead all UNO scorers while Gwidt had a goal and two assists. With a goal and an assist, Walters is now tied with St. Lawrence's Greg Carey for the overall scoring lead in the NCAA with 45 points. Ten different players earned at least a point for UNO.
The win was the first for UNO this season when trailing after two periods. They had lost in all previous 10 games in which they trailed.
The Mavericks return home for an exhibition game against the U.S. National Team Development Program on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7:37 p.m.
