ANCHORAGE, Alaska –
Dayn Belfour earned his first career shutout with just 10 saves as the Omaha hockey team beat Alaska Anchorage, 3-0, on Friday night at Sullivan Arena.
The Mavericks snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 17-12-2 overall and 13-8-2 in the WCHA putting them in a tie with Minnesota and idle North Dakota for second place. Alaska Anchorage is now 4-18-7 overall and 2-17-6 in the league.
Leading 1-0 in the third period,
Brent Gwidt gave the Mavericks some breathing room against the determined Seawolves. He broke down the left wing, cut to the net but got knocked down. He didn't give up on the play, batting the puck in with one hand while on his stomach for his sixth goal of the year.
Matt White then iced the game with 1:21 remaining. He took a pass from
Bryce Aneloski, sprinted past the UAA defense and fired a shot past goalie Chris Kamal for his 15th goal of the year.
The Mavericks scored first just beyond the halfway mark of the first period. White threw a pass in front to
Ryan Walters who held off a defenseman to knock in his team-leading 18th goal of the year.
Good scoring chances were tough to come by in the second period.
Tanner Lane had UNO's best opportunity but was stopped on a breakaway by Kamal.
UNO was held to a season-low 19 shots on goal but tied a school record by allowing just 10 shots.
Belfour improved to 1-1-0 on the year. It was his first career win as a starter as both wins last year came in relief.
Both White and Gwidt snapped five-game scoring droughts in the game.
The two teams finish their series on Saturday night at 10:07 p.m. CT.
