DENTON, Texas - The UNO softball team scraped out a 4-3 win over host North Texas Friday night to improve to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 at the North Texas Lovelace Invitational.
Ashton Hughes hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie, and
Mara Eeman added an RBI single to make it 4-2. In the top of the seventh, North Texas (3-4) drew a run back off of
Dana Elsasser and had a runner on first with two outs, but Elsasser (4-0) got a groundout to finish off the win.
The win was the second of the day for the Mavericks, who defeated Dayton 9-2 earlier on Friday.
Campbell Ditto went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Both Ditto and
Molly Negrete have a hit in all seven games this season.
Amber Lutmer was 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, her fifth of the season, and
Mara Eeman was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Mavs jumped in front on Lutmer's two-run homer in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fourth, North Texas' Taylor Schoblocher reached first on a two-out error, and the Mean Green ended up scoring two unearned runs on three hits to tie the game, 2-2.
Schoblocher reached base in the top of the sixth with no outs, but the Mavs turned a double play to avoid any damage.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ditto led off with a double and Negrete hit a one-out infield single to move Ditto to third.
Tonya Peterson walked to load the bases, and Hughes flied out to center field to score Ditto. Eeman then singled home Negrete to make it 4-2.
In the top of the seventh, North Texas got a one-out double from Danielle Hoff, who was then replaced by pinch-runner Madison Tierney. With two outs, Karly Williams singled home Tierney to make it 4-3. But Elsasser got pinch-hitter Madison Thompson to ground out to her to end the game.
Elsasser allowed just one earned run on seven hits and no walks. She struck out four.
The Mavs will play Oklahoma State at 9 a.m. and Iowa at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Iowa is also unbeaten through two games at the tournament.
