WILMINGTON, N.C. - The UNO softball team slugged its way past Detroit Sunday morning for a 5-2 win to capture the UNCW Beach Blast title with a perfect 5-0 record at the tournament. The last time the Mavs started a season 5-0 was 2002.
Dana Elsasser improved to 3-0 with the victory, and
Campbell Ditto homered for the second time this season and
Amber Lutmer added the go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to lift the Mavs.
On the weekend, the Mavs crushed 12 home runs in five games. The Mavs had just 18 all of last season.
Ditto got UNO on the board in the bottom of the first with a solo shot for a 1-0 lead. Detroit (1-4) rallied to take the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth though off of an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly.
But the Mavs came back as soon as they got their next chance.
Tara Trede hit a one-out triple to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning, and with two outs gone,
Lindsay Redding tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single up the middle to score Trede. Ditto then singled, putting runners at the corners, and Lutmer stepped in and swatted her fourth homer of the season to center field to make it 5-2. The Mavs nearly added more insurance, but
Molly Negrete was caught trying to score from second on a single to left field by
Tonya Peterson.
Still, the three-run advantage was more than enough for Elsasser. She retired the Titans in order in the sixth and seventh to finish off her third win and second complete game this season.
Ditto was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Lutmer was 2-for-3 with one run and three RBIs. Negrete was also 2-for-3. Elsasser allowed two earned runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
The Mavs will now return to Omaha before heading to Denton, Texas next weekend for the North Texas Lovelace Invitational. UNO will face Dayton twice, North Texas, Oklahoma State and Iowa.
