Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team earned its second sweep of the season with a 3-1 win over the No. 8 Miami RedHawks on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.
Tanner Lane scored a shorthanded goal early in the second period for the eventual game winner, and
Ryan Massa stopped 25 shots for his fifth straight win.
The Mavericks improved to 8-6-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, good for first place. Miami suffered its third straight loss and is now 7-6-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the league.
Miami used the power play to forge a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. Matthew Caito was able to poke in the rebound of a shot by Kevin Morris at 10:42.
The Mavericks tied the game just 1:40 later during their own power play.
Ryan Walters kept the puck in at the left point and fired a shot that beat Miami goalie Ryan McKay just inside the near post.
UNO got its first lead of the night early in the second period. With
Brian O'Rourke in the penalty box, Lane blocked a pass by Riley Barber at the blue line. He took off on a breakaway, tucking a backhander between McKay's pads for a shorthanded goal at 3:55.
The Mavericks got an insurance goal in the third during another power play.
Michael Young's shot from the high slot was tipped by
Josh Archibald. McKay made the save, but
Dominic Zombo swiped home the rebound for his seventh goal of the year.
UNO outshot Miami 43-26 for the game while scoring two power play goals on five chances and holding the RedHawks 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
In winning his last five games, Massa has a goals-against average of 1.99 and a save percentage of .934.
Archibald now has points in seven of the last eight games (6-3-9) while Zombo has earned points in five of the last six (4-2-6).
UNO finished its grueling November schedule with a record of 6-2-0. The stretch was bookended by sweeps of Denver and Miami and included splits with then 10th ranked North Dakota and second ranked Michigan.
The Mavericks will get a week off before returning to action at Colorado College on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7.
