Box Score DENVER, Colo. –
Josh Archibald scored at 1:34 of overtime to give the Omaha hockey team a 3-2 win over Denver in the first ever National Collegiate Hockey Association game for both schools.
The Mavericks improved to 3-4-0 overall, snapping a three-game losing streak in the process. The Pioneers are also 3-4-0 this season. The win was the first for the Mavericks in Denver. UNO had been 0-8-2 all-time in the Mile High City.
On the game winner,
Jaycob Megna sent
Jake Guentzel up ice with a strong outlet pass. Archibald raced to join him down the right wing and steered Guentzel's pass through DU goalie Sam Brittain.
The overtime was set up in the third period. With Denver pressing for the equalizer, defenseman Joey LaLeggia beat UNO goaltender
Ryan Massa with a long shot from the blue line. Massa appeared to be screened on the play.
Massa was outstanding in picking up his first win since Feb. 18, 2012 at Colorado College. The native of neighboring Littleton, Colo. made 33 saves.
The Mavericks killed off an early penalty to
Austin Ortega and got their first goal just 24 seconds later. Archibald got behind the Denver net, stole the puck and centered to Guentzel who fired home his second goal of the season at 5:19 of the first period.
Denver started the second period with a power play and tied the game at 1:19. David Makowski threw a pass across the slot that defensive partner Will Butcher ripped past Massa.
UNO retook the lead on a power play later in the period. Archibald set up
Ian Brady for a shot from the left wing point that deflected off a DU defenseman in front of the net at 5:58. It was Brady's first collegiate goal.
Brittain was strong in net for DU, finishing with 31 saves. Makowski had two assists.
The Mavericks' much-maligned penalty kill stopped six of Denver's seven man advantages.
