Box Score OMAHA, Neb. - Summit League play got off to a perfect start for the Maverick women's soccer team, as they earned a 2-0 shutout over South Dakota on Sunday at the UNO Soccer Field.
Playing in the rain on a cold, windy day, the Mavericks (3-5-2, 1-0-0 Summit) looked anything but uncomfortable, taking the lead on a sixth-minute goal by
Ava Doetsch and never looking back.
Monica Bosiljevac played a ball in the midfield over the top to Doetsch on the left side. Doetsch ran it down and chipped it over charging goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor at the 5:15 mark. It was her second goal of the season.
The Mavs nearly made it 2-0 soon after when Doetsch played a ball across the face of the goal and
Melanie McCormick finished, but she was just offsides on the play.
The Mavericks did however double their lead on a similar play as the first goal at the 34:21 mark. Bosiljevac again played a ball behind the defense, this time on the right side.
Chelsi Rohloff broke away and chipped a shot from 25 yards out over Viktor and into the net to make it 2-0. It was also her second goal of the year.
The Mavericks had a 6-5 shots on goal advantage over the Coyotes (5-4-3, 0-1-0 Summit), but
Meaghan Clark stopped all five shots that came her way for her second shutout this season. Rohloff and
Hannah Wampler each had two shots on goal to lead the Mavs. Wampler and the back line of
Logen Watts,
Jordyn Braun and
Lauren Lawler, as well as substitute
Kerry Pivovar, were effective in limiting quality chances for the Coyotes, who entered the game second in The Summit League with 21 goals this season.
Omaha will now turn its focus to a Summit League road trip next weekend with games at North Dakota State on Friday and South Dakota State on Sunday.
