Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan scored four powerplay goals in a penalty-filled game to outlast the Omaha hockey team, 6-3, on Saturday night at the Berry Events Center.
The loss drops the Mavericks to 2-2-0 on the season while the win was the first of the season for the Wildcats (1-3-0).
Northern Michigan opened the scoring just 2:39 into the game. Off a heavy forecheck behind the Maverick net, D.J. Vandercook was able to send the puck to the front of the net. UNO goalie
Kirk Thompson seemed to lose track of the puck, and Jake Johnson knocked in his first goal of the year.
The Mavericks tied the game in the first seven seconds of their fifth power play of the period. Off the initial faceoff,
Josh Archibald took a pass from
Ian Brady and fired a shot past goaltender Michael Doan with just 22 seconds remaining in the period.
Penalties got the Mavericks into trouble in the second period. Northern Michigan got powerplay goals from Mitch Jones (5-on-4), C.J. Ludwig (5-on-3) and Stephan Vigier (ensuing 5-on-4) to take a 4-1 lead.
Ryan Walters got the Mavericks back to within two when he scored on a 5-on-3 power play for UNO, but the Mavs still trailed 4-2 after two.
Brock Maschmeyer tallied Northern Michigan's fourth powerplay goal, firing a wrist shot through a screen for his first collegiate goal at 7:49 of the third period to make it 5-2.
Dominic Zombo drew the Mavericks to within two goals when he scored on a shorthanded breakaway at 10:57, but Erik Higby scored into an empty net late to ice the game.
Northern Michigan finished with 10 power plays in the game while the Mavericks had nine.
Thompson suffered his first loss in the UNO goal, stopping 20 shots while Doan turned aside 19.
The Mavericks return home to host Cornell in a two-game series on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools in hockey.
