Brock Montpetit scored with 2:51 to go in the third period, and the Omaha hockey team held off Northern Michigan, 2-1, on Friday night at the Berry Events Center.
The win moved the Mavericks to 2-1-0 on the season while the Wildcats dipped to 0-3-0. The two teams conclude the series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
On the game-winning goal,
Brian O'Rourke took a shot from the right point. The rebound came to
Zahn Raubenheimer whose shot was also stopped, but it fluttered to Montpetit who lifted it over goalie Mathias Dahlstrom for the winner.
Michael Young was given a hooking penalty with 1:13 to go in the third, and Northern Michigan pulled Dahlstrom for a 6-on-4 advantage, but freshman goalie
Kirk Thompson made several strong saves and the Mavericks blocked several more shots to preserve the win.
Thompson finished with 28 saves for his second career win while Dahlstrom stopped 29.
The two teams played through a scoreless first period with Northern Michigan enjoying a slim 10-9 shot advantage. The Wildcats also had two power plays to one for UNO.
The Mavericks scored first during a four-on-three power play early in the second period. Young set up
Ryan Walters at the right face-off circle, and his shot deflected past Dahlstrom at 2:35.
Northern Michigan tied the game on a five-on-three man advantage at 7:06. The Mavericks lost the puck at their blue line trying to clear the zone. Stephan Vigier walked back in down the right wing and wired a shot over the glove hand of Thompson.
UNO had a chance to retake the lead during a five-minute power play when Jake Johnson went off for kneeing Young. But the Mavs could not capitalize and the game stayed tied into the second intermission.
Northern Michigan finished 1-for-8 on the power play while UNO was 1-for-4.
