Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Freshman goaltender
Kirk Thompson made 25 saves for his first collegiate win, helping the Omaha hockey team pick up its first win of the season, 4-2 over Bentley on Saturday night.
Four different players scored for the Mavericks to improve to 1-1-0 after dropping the first game to Bentley, 6-4 on Friday.
As they did on Friday, the Falcons grabbed the first lead. Defenseman Steve Weinstein intercepted a pass at center ice and raced down the left wing into the UNO zone. He threw a pass around a sliding UNO defenseman to Alex Grieve who knocked the puck past goalie
Kirk Thompson at 12:50.
The Mavericks tied the game on a buzzer-beater at the end of the period.
Jaycob Megna skated out of the UNO zone down the left wing. He got tripped up as he got deep in the Bentley zone but threw the puck to the slot as he fell.
Brock Montpetit scooped up the puck and tucked it in around goalie Brendan Komm with five-tenths of a second on the clock.
UNO earned its first lead of the weekend 1:36 into the second period.
Ryan Walters and
Josh Archibald did the heavy work behind the net to get the puck in front to
Dominic Zombo. With Komm down on the ice, Zombo swirled a backhander by the fallen netminder for his first goal of the season.
Bentley countered on a five-on-three power play. Andrew Gladiuk got loose at the right post and roofed a shot over the glove hand of Thompson to tie the game at 4:28.
But the Mavericks retook the lead on their own power play.
Jake Guentzel carried the puck over the Bentley blue line and snapped a shot through the legs of a Bentley defenseman. The shot surprised Komm, sailing past his glove hand to put UNO up 3-2 after two.
Josh Archibald scored an empty net goal with 30.5 seconds left in a tense third period to ice the game.
The Mavericks make their first road trip of the season next week when they visit Northern Michigan for games on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18-19.
