Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Bentley scored four special teams goals and held off a furious rally by the Omaha hockey team to win 6-4 on Friday night in the season opener for both schools.
The Falcons got two powerplay goals and two shorthanded goals to deal the Mavericks their first season-opening loss in seven years.
Trailing 5-2 entering the third period, the Mavericks made a push. First,
Josh Archibald jabbed home a feed from
Ryan Walters at 10:02 to make it 5-3.
Just 1:52 later,
Austin Ortega scored his first collegiate goal, zipping a shot from just inside the Bentley blue line past goalie Brendan Komm.
But Brett Gensler picked up his second goal of the game with an empty netter at 19:40 to ice the game.
Bentley seized the first advantage in the game while shorthanded. The Falcons took advantage of a turnover at the UNO blue line, giving Jared Rickord and Derek Bacon a two-on-one. Bacon's shot was stopped by
Ryan Massa but the puck carried into the net for the goal at 4:19.
The Falcons doubled their lead on the power play. Zach Ledford's shot from the left point hit the skate of a UNO defender and ricocheted to Max French who fired the puck past Massa.
UNO responded 1:23 later. Nick Seeler's wrist shot from the top of the slot caromed in off the crossbar to make it 2-1. The Mavericks outshot the Falcons 18-7 in the period.
The second period started well for the Mavericks who tied the game when
Zahn Raubenheimer tipped a shot by
James Polk that clanged in off the post at 1:22.
But Bentley roared back to score the next three goals. French scored his second of the game while the Falcons were shorthanded at 3:29. Alex Grieve punched in another goal 2:15 later, and Gensler got a powerplay goal late to make it 5-2 after two.
The Mavericks were 0-for-6 on the power play while outshooting the Falcons, 38-25.
The two teams finish the series on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
