OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO Mavericks took over first place in the WCHA, scoring two third-period goals to beat Colorado College, 3-1, on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.
The Mavericks swept the Tigers after beating them 8-4 on Friday night. UNO is now 13-8-1 overall and 9-4-1 in the WCHA, one point ahead of St. Cloud State which was playing a non-conference series this weekend. The Tigers, winless in seven (0-6-1), are now 8-12-2 overall and 5-8-1 in league play.
With the game tied at one in the third,
Andrej Sustr put the Mavericks ahead for the first time in the game. His wrist shot from the left point beat Tigers' goalie Joe Howe, who was screened by
Tanner Lane on the play, at 9:28.
Just 35 seconds later, the Mavericks added an insurance goal.
Ryan Walters fed the puck up the right wing to
Josh Archibald who had room to skate into the CC zone before blowing a slap shot into the far top corner of the net for his 11th goal of the year and fourth tally of the weekend.
The Mavericks then clamped down on Colorado College, riding out a late penalty kill that turned into a six-on-four advantage when the Tigers pulled Howe for an extra attacker.
The Tigers opened the scoring on a power play midway through the first period. Eammon McDermott fired a shot from the left point. William Rapuzzi, stationed in front of
John Faulkner, tipped the puck past him for his 11th goal of the year.
Good scoring chances were tough to come by in the second period as the Mavericks outshot the Tigers, 7-4. They finally broke through while playing shorthanded.
Brent Gwidt hawked a loose puck along the left wing boards and dug it out for
Dominic Zombo. Zombo found
Bryce Aneloski joining the play, and he beat goalie Joe Howe with a wrist shot from the low slot to tie the game.
The series sweep was the fourth of the season for the Mavericks, their third against a WCHA team.
Faulkner picked up his 11th win of the year and 49th of his career with 20 saves. He is now just four wins from tying Dan Ellis for most wins all-time by a UNO goalie. Howe made 26 saves in the loss as UNO outshot CC, 29-21.
The Mavericks are back on the road next weekend at Denver for games on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11 and 12.
