PITTSBURGH, Pa. - One current and two future UNO hockey players were drafted in the NHL Entry Draft on Saturday.
Freshman goaltender Anthony Stolarz was taken in the second round with the 45th overall pick by the Philadelphia Flyers. That makes him the highest drafted player on the UNO roster. He was the fourth-ranked North American goaltender as determined by the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau.
Freshman defenseman
Brian Cooper was taken in the fifth round, 127th overall, by the Anaheim Ducks.
Sophomore defenseman
Jaycob Megna was picked in the seventh round, 210th overall, also by Anaheim.
The Mavericks now have eight drafted players on their roster. The list includes seniors
Brent Gwidt (sixth round, Washington, 2006) and
Bryce Aneloski (seventh round, Ottawa, 2010) and sophomore
Josh Archibald (sixth round, Pittsburg, 2011). In addition, two other incoming freshmen also have been drafted. Forward
Tanner Lane was taken by the Atlanta Thrashers (now the Winnipeg Jets) in the sixth round in 2010 while defenseman Nick Seeler was a fifth-round choice of the Minnesota Wild in 2011.
Stolarz played last season with the Corpus Christi IceRays of the North American Hockey League. The native of Jackson, N.J. posted a record of 23-22-4 with a 2.84 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage while earning three shutouts.
Cooper played the last two years for the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League. He had six goals and 18 assists for 24 points last season. The native of Anchorage, Alaska was named to the All-USHL Second Team for the second straight season and was named the USHL's Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
Megna appeared in 35 games for the Mavericks during his freshman year, scoring two goals and three assists while amassing eight penalty minutes.
Earlier this week, both Stolarz and Cooper were named to the USA Hockey's National Junior Evaluation Camp roster. The camp takes place in Lake Placid, N.Y. in August.
The Mavericks begin the 2012-13 season on Oct. 12 at the Icebreaker in Kansas City.
