Former Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year Allie

OMAHA - University of Nebraska Omaha softball coach Jeanne Scarpello announced Friday that Allie Mathewson, the former Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year, has transferred to UNO to join the softball program. Mathewson, a Papillion-La Vista South product, was one of the top players as a freshman at Creighton in 2012. She will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2013 season, the Mavs' first with a full Summit League schedule.

"We are excited that Allie has chosen to become a Maverick," Scarpello said. "Allie is a tremendous athlete who will bring experience, speed and power to the batting lineup. Not only does she possess a strong work ethic, she also has a strong competitive spirit. We look for Allie to help us excel on the field, as well as in the classroom."

Mathewson was the leadoff or second hitter every game in the Bluejay lineup in her first year in the program this past season. She
hit .339 and started all 54 games in the outfield or at first base, earning All-Missouri Valley Conference Second-Team honors. Mathewson recorded seven doubles, one triple, five home runs and 25 RBIs and led the team with 44 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 16 attempts. She tied for seventh in the MVC in batting average and posted 18 multiple-hit games.

At Papillion-La Vista South High School, Mathewson was named the Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year and honorary captain of the Lincoln Journal Star Super-State team as a senior. She led Class A with a school-record .542 batting average as a senior and hit .462 in her career. Mathewson twice earned Super-State honors from the LJS and All-Nebraska from the Omaha World-Herald. Mathewson played club softball for Explosion and Sizzle Gold.
