OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO softball team wrapped up the week with a 1-0 shutout win over Peru State on Friday evening at Westside Field at Westbrook.
The win improved the Mavericks to 17-13 on the year, while Peru State dropped to 21-15 overall.
Dana Elsasser was dominant in the circle, improving to 10-6 on the year after allowing no runs on two hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Elsasser threw her 14th complete game and sixth shutout of the season, including her third straight complete-game shutout.
After Peru State's leadoff hitter got on base in the first inning, Elsasser retired 17 batters in a row. The Bobcats put the potential tying run on board in the top of the seventh, but
Emma Wright caught a sharp line drive and tagged out the runner on first for a double play. Elsasser got Miranda Lyndes to fly out to right to end the game.
The Mavs produced the game's only run in the bottom of the second inning.
Molly Negrete reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Wright then lined a pitch up the middle to score Negrete from second.
The Mavs struggled against Peru State ace Devon Massengale. UNO totaled just four hits, with two of them coming from bunt singles by
Lindsay Redding.
Katelyn Hinton also had a hit for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks will take the weekend off before returning to play next Wednesday, as UNO travels to face Sioux Falls for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on April 11.
