MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The UNO baseball team dropped a close loss to Minnesota on Wednesday afternoon, falling in a 1-0 shutout at the Metrodome. The Mavericks are now 11-27 on the year, while the Gophers improve to 22-17.
Sophomore
Caleb Palensky tallied a double on the day, while seniors
Colby McCord and
Mark Waldron, junior
Connor McCrite and freshman
Alex Mortensen each had one single. As a team, UNO outhit UM, 5-4.
Minnesota was led by Andy Henkemeyer's 2-for-3 effort at the plate, while Kurt Schlangen was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Ty McDevitt earned the win, limiting UNO to a trio of hits over four innings with three strikeouts and a walk. Freshman
Cole Volkers took the loss, surrendering one unearned run with three hits over his six-inning outing. Volkers walked three and struck out two. UM's Kevin Kray was credited with the save after giving up two hits in the final two-thirds of the ninth inning.
Minnesota scored its only run in the bottom of the first, the only offense it needed. Schlangen bunted for a single and advanced to second on Geason's sacrifice bunt. Olinger then reached on a fielder's choice to push Schlangen to third, and the run came in on a Maverick throwing error to make it 1-0.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, the Mavericks looked poised for a rally. UNO keyed back-to-back singles from McCrite and Mortensen to put two runners on for freshman
Jared Patton. But the Gophers forced a final fly out for the last out, sealing the score at 1-0.
UNO returns to action April 21-22, traveling to future Summit League foe Oakland in Rochester, Mich. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 11 a.m. (CT), and Sunday's series finale is set for Noon (CT).
