LAKELAND, Fla. – Coming off a 19-inning game less than a day earlier, the UNO baseball team stretched its win streak to three games on Friday, defeating Bucknell 13-1 at Henley Field at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. With the victory, the Mavericks improved to 6-14 on the year and 3-1 for the tournament, while Bucknell drops to 7-8 on the season.
Five Mavericks tallied multi-hit games, and senior
Andrew Reck led the way at the plate with a perfect 4-for-4 effort, a run scored and another driven in.
In addition, Senior
Mark Waldron went 3-for-5, scored three times and had three RBI, while freshman
Joe Mancuso was 2-for-3 with one run scored and an RBI. Sophomore
Caleb Palensky also finished 2-for-4 while scoring three times, and senior
Brady Hohl was 2-for-6 with four runs driven in and another scored.
As a team, UNO compiled 15 hits and committed no errors, while the Bison totaled nine hits and had one error.
Senior starter
Curtis Smith (1-1) earned the win, scattering five hits over six scoreless innings with four strikeouts and a walk. Dan Weigel (4-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk. Sophomore
Anthony Falcone earned his first career save, allowing one run on four hits in the last three innings. He issued no free passes and fanned two batters.
Nebraska Omaha took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, then stretched it to 5-0 in the fifth. Three more runs came across with five hits in the seventh to give the Mavs a definitive 8-0 edge.
The Mavericks exploded for five runs in the eighth, helped by four straight walks to open the inning by McCord, freshman
Jared Patton, Palensky and senior
Scotty Donner. With the bases loaded, Waldron chipped in an RBI single to score Patton, and Reck singled in Palensky. Senior
Brandon Winkelmann was then plunked by a pitch and credited with the RBI as Donner came in. A two-run single by Hohl was the final nail, plating both Reck and Waldron to put UNO ahead 13-0.
Bucknell got on the board in the bottom of the ninth, tallying three hits. Travis Clark doubled, and Tom Hrabchak later delivered an RBI single, erasing the possibility of a shutout and capping the game with a 13-1 final score.
