WINTER HAVEN, Fla. –
The UNO baseball team rebounded on its second day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, posting an 8-4 win over Chicago State at Chain of Lakes Stadium. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 4-14 on the year, while the Cougars dropped to 0-13.

Junior Matt Tew (1-2) had a solid outing on the mound for his first win of the season. The Bellevue East graduate threw a season-long six innings of scoreless ball, allowing just two singles and two walks while striking out a career-high eight. The Cougars managed just four base runners through the first six innings.

CSU's Steven O'Hair surrendered six runs – five earned – off nine hits. He struck out one batter and issued no walks in three innings of work.

Senior Mark Waldron led the way offensively for UNO, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Senior Colby McCord added a 3-for-4 day with a pair of runs scored, and senior Scotty Donner finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and another driven in.

Chicago State's Eric O'Brien went 2-for-3 with two RBI for the afternoon.

As a team, UNO totaled its eight runs on 15 hits and put together an errorless game in the field.

The Mavericks got on the board with two runs on four hits in the second inning. Waldron led off with a single to left, later advancing to second on Donner's bunt single. Tomlinson then singled to right to score Waldron, and Donner came in on senior Andrew Reck's RBI single to center, making it 2-0.

Nebraska Omaha added four more in the third with four hits. McCord, sophomore Caleb Palensky and Waldron strung together three consecutive singles, and a Cougar error allowed McCord to come across. Palensky came in on a wild pitch, and Donner added an infield single that plated Waldron. Mortensen scored the final run of the inning when freshman Joe Mancuso reached on a fielder's choice, pushing it to 6-0.

Both teams stayed scoreless until the seventh, with Tew striking out the side in the fourth inning and limiting CSU to just one more single in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, UNO chipped in a single score, sparked by Waldron's leadoff double to left and aided by a CSU miscue that brought the score to 7-0.

Chicago State made its first noise in the bottom of the frame, putting up two runs on a pair of hits. Albert Carpen drew a walk from Maverick reliever Dylan McGill, later scoring when Jack Bobillo sent an RBI double to left. Ryan Malhotra immediately singled to plate Bobillo, pushing it to 7-2.

Nebraska Omaha tacked on another run in the eighth to bolster its lead, as McCord doubled to right center, and Waldron added another double of his own to score McCord at 8-2.

CSU responded with one in the bottom half of the inning as Tony Curatolo earned a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and came in on O'Brien's RBI double to left. The Cougars added a final run in the ninth, but it was not enough as UNO halted the effort with a final score of 8-4.

UNO returns to action on Thursday, March 15, facing Long Island. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. Live stats will not be available, but live audio will be linked on OMavs.com.
