OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team played its first game within the city limits on Monday, dropping a 19-9 loss to BYU at the CU Sports Complex. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 3-13 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 6-6 (2-1 WCC).
Freshman
Alex Mortensen finished 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI, two runs scored and a walk. The Millard North product smashed his third home run in four games with a three-run shot in the ninth.
Senior
Colby McCord also went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and another driven in, while senior
Cory Buckley homered in the fifth, marking the first home run of his career.
David Parry (1-0) earned the win for BYU, allowing four runs – two of which were earned – off four hits over 3.2 innings. Parry also fanned four batters while walking one. UNO starter
Josh Bullock (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs – four earned – on three hits while walking four.
BYU had five players with multi-hit performances: Kelton Caldwell (3-for-5), Stephen Wells (3-for-5), Adam Law (2-for-3), Brock Whitney (2-for-4) and Wes Guenther (2-for-4). Law scored three times and drove in another run, while Whitney added a team-best three RBI.
The Cougars got on the board immediately with five runs in the first inning, then stretched the lead to 8-0 in the third. UNO made its first noise in the bottom of the third with two runs and added another pair in the fourth to make it an 8-4 ballgame.
The fifth inning saw BYU explode for six runs, pounding out six hits and capitalizing on a UNO error to go up 14-4. After another two-spot by UNO with Buckley's roundtripper in the bottom of the frame, the Cougars tacked on another three scores in the sixth to push their advantage to 17-6.
Two more single-run innings in the eighth and the ninth left the Mavericks facing a 19-6 deficit. In the final inning, Hohl led off with a double to left center followed by a McCord single through the right side. Mortensen then sent his three-run bomb over the left field wall, marking his third career homer and punctuating the Mavs' scoring effort with a final score of 19-9.
For the game, UNO and BYU combined for 28 hits. The two squads committed seven errors and left 17 runners on base.
Nebraska Omaha returns to action tomorrow, traveling to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Mavericks kick off their seven-game, eight-day tournament run on Tuesday, facing Army at 5 p.m. (CT) in Auburndale, Fla.
