ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State got a goal with 42.4 seconds remaining in regulation and added an empty netter to beat the UNO Mavericks, 3-1, and sweep their best-of-three playoff series.
The loss ends the Mavericks' season at 14-18-6 while the Huskies advance to the WCHA Final Five in St. Paul, Minn. next week.
On the winning goal, the Huskies worked a perfected tic-tac-toe play, setting up Ben Hanowski who beat
John Faulkner with a wrist shot to the top corner.
Travis Novak's empty net goal came as the horn sounded.
Faulkner played a valiant game in goal for UNO which was outshot 38-33. Faulkner finished with 35 saves.
The first period was scoreless thanks to Faulkner's work. With
Tony Turgeon ejected for checking from behind and
Andrej Sustr off for a high stick, St. Cloud State fired away on a five-on-three power play but couldn't dent Faulkner who finished the period with 16 saves.
The two-man advantage continued into the second period, and St. Cloud State finally broke through 22 seconds in when Jared Festler one-timed a pass from Hanowski past Faulkner.
UNO tied the game when
Dominic Zombo carried the puck into the St. Cloud zone and beat goalie Mike Lee with a wrist shot through traffic for his second goal of the year.
The Mavericks finished the season with losses in their last six games. Excluding the empty net goal on Saturday, four were by one goal.
