SEATTLE, Wash. – The UNO baseball team wrapped up a three-game series at Seattle on Wednesday, falling 3-2 and 8-3 to the Redhawks. With the losses, the Mavericks are now 2-9 on the season, while SU improves to 5-5.
GAME 1 - SEATTLE 3, NEBRASKA OMAHA 2
In the first game of the day, seniors
Mark Waldron (2-for-4) and
Brady Hohl (2-for-5) both put up multi-hit performances. Junior
Tyler Splichal and senior
Colby McCord scored a run apiece, driven in by sophomore
Caleb Palensky and freshman
Alex Mortensen, respectively.
Garrett Anderson (1-1) earned the win for Seattle, giving up just two hits over 2.2 innings of scoreless relief work. Senior reliever
Curtis Smith (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout over 3.2 innings on the hill.
SU starter Seafth Howe tossed 5.1 innings, scattering four hits while striking out six and issuing no walks. Junior
Matt Tew had the start for UNO, surrendering two runs on four hits with a pair of Ks over 4.2 innings.
Though Seattle had three hits and left five runners on in the first half of the game, both squads were scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. Nate Roberts broke it open with a two-run homer, putting the Redhawks up 2-0.
The Mavericks responded immediately, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the next frame. Splichal reached base on a catcher's interference call, then advanced to third on a single by McCord. Palensky's sacrifice fly then plated Splichal, and Mortensen followed with a single to score McCord, knotting the score at 2-2.
UNO had an opportunity to go ahead in the seventh but left the bases loaded, unable to capitalize. For its part, Seattle was held hitless until the ninth, when a single by Josh Kutz and a double from Cullen Hendrickson put two on for pinch hitter Sean Narby. He then sent a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Michael Tevlin for the winning run and sealing the 3-2 win.
GAME 2 - SEATTLE 8, NEBRASKA OMAHA 3
In the nightcap, senior
Scotty Donner went 2-for-2 with a run driven in and another scored, while McCord finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs. Waldron also had another multi-hit performance with a 2-for-4 effort.
Grant Gunning (2-1) was credited with the win, scattering six hits and fanning five over seven scoreless innings. Redshirt freshman
Zach Williamsen (1-1) took his first loss of the year, giving p four runs – three earned – on three hits over 2.1 innings.
Seattle got on the board with three runs in the second inning, then added another in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Redhawks chipped in two more scores in the sixth and another in the seventh, commanding a 7-0 advantage.
UNO answered in the eighth with McCord's two-run double that scored Donner and Palensky, pulling it to 7-2. The Redhawks added their final run of the night in the bottom of the inning, extending the lead to 8-2. Nebraska Omaha then managed one more run in the top of the ninth on Donner's RBI single that scored senior
Brandon Winkelmann, bringing the final tally to 8-3.
UNO returns to action on Tuesday, March 6, traveling to Missouri. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Taylor Stadium in Columbia, Mo.
