COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The UNO Mavericks had the apparent game-tying goal waved off with less than three minutes remaining in the third period, and the Colorado College Tigers held on for a 4-3 win on Friday night at World Arena.
The Mavericks fell back into sixth place with the loss and are now 13-12-6 overall and 10-8-5 in the WCHA. Game two of the weekend series is Saturday night at 8:07 p.m. CT.
On the play,
Terry Broadhurst outworked a CC player for the puck and fed it in front. It went in off the skate of
Dominic Zombo who was trying to shake free from a defender. After review, the referees said Zombo kicked in the puck.
Matt Smith had given the Mavericks a lift just 1:57 into the third when he scored his first goal of the season and second of his career off a pass from
Brock Montpetit.
But just 50 seconds later, Colorado College scored the game-winning goal when Jaden Schwartz converted a netmouth scramble in front of
Ryan Massa.
The Tigers opened the scoring just 3:30 into the game. Alexander Krushelnyski got behind the defense off a pass from Gabe Guentzel. He roared in on a breakaway, beating Massa with a high wrist shot for his eighth of the year.
Colorado College doubled its lead late in the period when its top line got a 3-on-1 break. Jaden Schwartz fed his brother, Rylan, for his 20th goal of the year against a helpless Massa. The Tigers led 2-0 after one.
UNO cut into the Tiger's lead early in the second period. While on the power play,
Johnnie Searfoss knocked in the rebound of a shot by
Michael Young for his third goal of the year.
The Tigers restored the two-goal lead when Omaha native Nick Dineen fired home his own powerplay goal just 2:04 later.
The Mavs' power play, which had been clicking at less than 10 percent over the last 10 games, struck again. This time, Matt White walked in and beat CC's Josh Thorimbert with a wrist shot inside the right post to help UNO close to within 3-2.
In the game,
Bryce Aneloski picked up an assist on White's goal to extend his point-scoring streak to a team-best eight games.
Massa made 28 saves in the loss while Thorimbert stopped 22.
