AMES, Iowa - The UNO softball team began its 2012 season with a pair of losses at the Ramada Inn UNI-Dome Classic at Iowa State's Bergstrom Indoor Practice Facility Saturday morning. The Mavs fell to Green Bay, 7-1, and to Valparaiso, 6-0, to start their inaugural Division I season.
The Mavs started the day with a 7-1 loss to Green Bay, despite spraying 13 hits all over the field. Green Bay mustered 12 hits but managed seven runs.
Lauren Larson singled home
Lindsay Redding, who had reached on a single, for the Mavs' lone run to take 1-0 first inning lead.
Dana Elsasser took the loss for the Mavericks. Five Mavs had two hits in the game.
In the late morning game, Valparaiso shut out UNO, 6-0. The Maverick bats were quiet in the second game, as Larson,
Amber Lutmer,
Emma Wright and
Molly Negrete had the only four hits for UNO.
Ashton Hughes started the game and took the loss, giving up four runs and five hits in 1.1 innings.
Kat Barrow relieved her and went 4.2 innings, allowing two runs and four hits. Valpo's Amanda Wisniewski went 3-for-3 and hit a solo home run.
On the day, Lutmer and Negrete finished 3-for-6, and Larson and Wright went 3-for-7 to lead the Mavs at the plate.
The Mavericks continue play at the tournament with two games on Sunday. UNO faces North Dakota at 2 p.m. and
Northern Iowa at 6 p.m. The tournament is closed to the public due to construction in Iowa State's campus.
