Box Score Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State broke a 1-1 tie midway through the third period and held on for a 2-1 win over the Omaha hockey team on Saturday night at the National Hockey Center.

The win helped the Huskies salvage a split of the series with the Mavericks who won 6-5 on Friday.  UNO is now 10-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the WCHA while the Huskies improved to 9-7-0 and 7-5-0 in league play.

On the game-winning goal, Ben Hanowski took a pass from Nic Dowd.  It got knocked off his stick but he recovered and threw a pass across the slot to Jonny Brodzinski who was open on the right wing.  He slid the puck past Anthony Stolarz at 10:45.

The goal was preceded by two apparent goals by the Mavericks that were both waved off.  Andrej Sustr slipped the puck in off a net mouth scramble, but referees ruled that goalie Ryan Faragher had been interfered with by UNO's Brock Montpetit.

Minutes later, Aaron Pearce appeared to score while being knocked down at the side of the SCSU net, but this time the referees ruled that Pearce had kicked the puck into the net.

The loss ruined a fine night for the Mavericks' freshman goaltender who made 26 saves.  Stolarz is now 1-4-0 this year with all four of his losses by a single goal.  In fact, all of UNO's five losses this season have been by one goal.

The Huskies seized the advantage at the 10-minute mark of the first period when Nick Jensen kept the puck in at the right point and fired a shot that beat Anthony Stolarz who was being screened.

The Mavericks tied the game in the final minute of the first.  In the last seconds of a penalty kill, Matt White raced up the right wing and wired a hard wrist shot over the glove of Faragher.  It was UNO's third shorthanded goal of the season.

For the weekend, the Mavericks had just one power play opportunity.

The Mavericks finish the first half of the season at home on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15 when they host Minnesota State.
