HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac Bobcats spotted the UNO Mavericks an early lead but came back to win 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the TD Bank Sport Center. The win gave the Bobcats a sweep of the non-conference series.
The loss dropped the Mavericks to 11-8-1 on the year while Quinnipiac stretched its nation-best unbeaten streak to 12 games (11-0-1) and improved its record to 14-3-2.
UNO took advantage of an early power play to grab the lead. The Mavericks won the faceoff back to defenseman
Michael Young who slipped a pass to
Ryan Walters. He fired a shot from the top of the faceoff circle that beat goalie Eric Hartzell for his team-leading 12th goal of the year.
The Bobcats answered less than three minutes later when Clay Harvey got free in front of the UNO net and beat
John Faulkner with a shot just under the crossbar.
Quinnipiac took the lead on a power play later in the period. Connor Jones slipped a shot past Faulkner just inside the far post at 15:59.
The Bobcats stretched their lead to 3-1 early in the second period. On their fourth power play of the game, Ben Arnt knocked in the rebound of a shot by Matthew Peca for his fourth goal of the year.
Faulkner suffered the loss with 34 saves as UNO was outshot 37-29 for the game. Hartzell got the win with 28 saves.
Walters' goal helped him extend his goal-scoring streak to four games. He now has points in 11 of the last 12 games (12-13-25).
The Mavericks return home to resume their WCHA schedule on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 4-5 when they host Colorado College.
