MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. –
Josh Archibald scored an early third period goal to finish off a three-point night, and the No. 13/14 Omaha hockey team held on for a 3-2 win at Minnesota on Friday night at Mariucci Arena.
The win stretches the Mavericks' winning streak to seven games, just one from tying the school record. UNO is now 9-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the WCHA while third-ranked Minnesota dipped to 9-3-2 overall and 4-3-2 in league play. The loss ended their six-game unbeaten streak.
The two teams meet again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
On the winning goal,
Dominic Zombo tied up the puck along the right wing wall in the Minnesota zone. That forced a turnover right to the stick of
Ryan Walters. He drew the defense to him before feeding Archibald who fired a shot just under the crossbar for his team-leading seventh goal of the year.
Walters finished the night with two assists to stretch his scoring streak to six games (6-9-15). Zombo also has points in six games (5-6-11).
The Mavericks opened the scoring just 4:17 into the game when Archibald raced down the right wing and threaded a pass through traffic to Zombo who was crashing the net. He poked the puck past goalie Adam Wilcox for this fifth goal of the year.
Minnesota tied the game 1:03 later when UNO lost the puck in its own zone. Erik Haula found Zach Budish alone in the slot, and he beat
John Faulkner with a hard wrist shot.
The Gophers took their first lead of the game late in the period. Nick Bjugstad slipped the puck through a maze of skates to Christian Isackson who hammered home his second goal of the year.
Minnesota came into the game with the WCHA's best penalty kill, but the Mavs tied the game late in their second power play of the game. Walters held the puck at the right faceoff circle before spotting defenseman
Jaycob Megna creeping in from the left point. Walters fed the puck across, and Megna fired a shot that caromed in off the crossbar with one second remaining in the man advantage.
Faulkner remained unbeaten on the year at 8-0-1, making 19 saves for his 46th career win. That puts him second all-time in wins at UNO.
Wilcox made 24 saves as the Mavericks outshot Minnesota, 27-21.
UNO remains unbeaten at Minnesota (3-0-0), having won their first two WCHA games there in October of 2010.
