HOUGHTON, Mich. –
Zahn Raubenheimer posted his second straight two-goal game, and
Josh Archibald added two more to power the Omaha hockey team to a 5-3 win over Michigan Tech on Saturday night at MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
The win gave the Mavericks their first series sweep of the year and improved to 4-3-1 on the year and 2-1-1 in the WCHA. UNO beat the Huskies, 2-1, on Friday night. Michigan Tech lost its fifth straight game and fell to 2-6-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the WCHA.
Michigan Tech opened the scoring about 12 minutes into the game when David Johnstone crept in from the left wing and knocked in the rebound of a shot by Alex Petan for his first goal of the season.
Raubenheimer kept the hot hand from the previous night, tying the game at 4:14. He stayed with a bouncing puck and tucked it past the outstretched leg of Tech goalie Pheonix Copley.
Three and a half minutes later, UNO had its first lead of the night. Archibald fired a shot from the left wing wall that fooled Copley who had traffic in front of his net.
The Huskies fought back to tie the game at 10:03. Brad Stebner's shot was deflected right to Blake Pietila who fired the puck past a helpless
John Faulkner for his fifth goal of the year.
The Mavericks retook the lead on the power play.
Ryan Walters squeezed a shot between Copley and the left post for his first goal of the year and the first powerplay goal for UNO in 19 attempts.
Just 25 seconds later, the Mavs stretched their lead.
Johnnie Searfoss spotted Raubenheimer up ice and hit him with a pinpoint pass. Raubenheimer roared in on a breakaway, getting two tries at the puck before knocking it past Copley for his fourth goal of the weekend.
Archibald picked up his second of the game into an empty net to make it 5-2 late in the third period before Tech closed the scoring with a later powerplay goal from Alex Petan.
Faulkner improved to 4-0-1 on the year with 24 saves. It was UNO's first win on Saturday night. Copley took the loss for Michigan Tech, making 23 saves and allowing four goals in two periods of work. Kevin Genoe worked the third period, stopping 15 shots.
The Mavericks return home to host Minnesota Duluth for Homecoming on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 10 and 11.
