VERMILLION, S.D. - Freshman Hannah Wampler scored the game-winning goal with 20 seconds left to lift the UNO women's soccer team to a 3-2 win at Summit League foe South Dakota Friday evening. The win gave head coach Don Klosterman his 200th career win at UNO.
The back-and-forth match between South Dakota and Omaha appeared to be headed to overtime until Danielle Archuleta tracked down a loose ball deep in USD territory and passed it across the box to Wampler for the decisive goal - her second of the game - with 20 seconds remaining.
The Mavericks improved to 2-11 overall and 2-1 in Summit League play. Klosterman, in his 14th season as the only head coach in UNO women's soccer history, achieved his 200th career win in grand fashion.
Wampler opened the scoring in the third minute when she collected a corner kick from Anna Sibson and finished it into the upper right corner of the net for her first-career goal.
The Mavs took the 1-0 lead into the 67th minute when Jenny Teslow evened up the game at 1-1. But UNO quickly answered with a goal from Wampler's fellow former Lincoln Southeast teammate, Morgan Westenburg. Westenburg converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute for her first-career goal, giving UNO a 2-1 edge with just under 20 minutes to play.
South Dakota (1-9-3, 0-2-1 Summit League) rallied to tie the game again though when Danielle Anderson scored with eight minutes remaining. That set up the thrilling finish that gave the Mavs their second conference win in three tries and has them in third place in The Summit League standings.
Shots on goal were even at 6-6. Meaghan Clark made four saves.
The Mavs will now head south to Kansas City on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.
