OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team opened the WCHA schedule with a 3-3 tie against Bemidji State on Friday night at the CenturyLink Center.  Josh Archibald had a goal and an assist to lead the attack.

The two teams face off again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.

The Mavericks wasted little time taking the lead.  Just 2:43 into the game, Dominic Zombo won a faceoff to Archibald.  He faked around a defender and zipped a wrist shot past goalie Andrew Walsh for his second goal of the year.

UNO bumped its lead early in the second period when Matt White pounced on the rebound of a shot by Brock Montpetit and knocked in his team-best third goal of the year.

Bemidji State trimmed the lead in half when Radoslav Illo got free in the slot and beat John Faulkner with a wrist shot at 9:03.  But just 17 seconds later, Johnnie Searfoss crashed the net, knocking a loose puck past Walsh to give UNO a 3-1 advantage.

But the Beavers battled back, getting goals from Aaron McLeod and Markus Gerbrandt a little more than three minutes apart to knot the game after two periods.

There was no scoring in the third period and overtime even though the Mavericks outshot the Beavers 11-4 over the final 25 minutes.  UNO did have to weather a penalty kill in overtime to earn the standings point.

Zombo finished the game with two assists.  Faulkner stopped 22 shots while Walsh turned aside 39.

Bemidji State is now 4-0-3 in Omaha since both teams joined the WCHA in 2010.
