OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO women's soccer team dropped a 6-1 match to South Dakota State on Friday afternoon at the UNO Soccer Field.
The loss puts the Mavericks at 3-14 overall and 3-4 in Summit League action. The Jackrabbits improved to 6-9-2 on the season and 4-3-1 in conference play.
Diana Potterveld got SDSU on the board first in the fourth minute when she put home a 10 yard shot from the right side after
Meaghan Clark punched a cross in that direction.
Potterveld doubled the lead in the 18th minute when she took a through ball from Christa Nyblom and slipped a shot into the right corner of the net past Clark.
UNO cut the lead in half just 38 seconds after halftime, as
Hannah Wampler took a pass from
Danielle Archuleta wide open at the top of the box. Wampler took a couple touches and placed it under the goalie's arms to make it 2-1.
But SDSU answered 1:10 later when former Maverick Megan Kingston scored during a scrum on the goal line after a shot by Delaney Ratcliffe went off the crossbar.
Potterveld then finished off a hat trick at 50:23, winning a long ball off a Maverick defender's foot and breaking in alone for her third goal of the match.
Stacy Guijarro made it 5-1 when she broke in behind the defense and beat Maverick goalie
Sarah Warren in the 68th minute. Nyblom converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute to make it 6-1.
South Dakota State outshot UNO 15-11 overall and 10-6 in shots on goal.
The Mavericks close the season on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. against North Dakota State at the UNO Soccer Field. Sunday's game is Senior Day, as the Mavs will pay tribute to their lone senior, Archuleta.
