Box Score Box Score

OMAHA, Neb. – Four different players had a goal and an assist to power the Omaha hockey team to a 5-2 win over Northern Michigan on Friday night at the CenturyLink Center.

The game was the first of two in a non-conference series between the former CCHA rivals.  Game two is Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.

The game shaped up as a defensive battle early, but the Mavericks finally broke through when Nick Seeler worked himself into a shooting lane and fired a shot from the top of the circles.  His shot hit the back boards and bounced to the side of the Northern Michigan net where Brock Montpetit knocked it in for his first goal of the season.

The Mavericks stretch their lead on a power play less than two minutes later.  Montpetit won the faceoff back to Michael Young who threw a wrist shot just inside the lower right corner past goalie Jared Coreau to make it 2-0 after one.

The lead grew early in the second period while the Mavericks were shorthanded.  Bryce Aneloski spotted Brent Gwidt up ice.  He roared in on Coreau, snapping a wrist shot under his right pad for his first career shorthanded goal.

Northern Michigan closed the gap to 3-1 off a good cycle in the UNO zone.  Darren Nowick cashed in, knocking in the rebound of shot by Justin Rose for his first career goal.

But less than a minute and a half later, Matt White restored the three-goal lead when he slipped the puck past Coreau for his second goal of the season.

In the third, Andrej Sustr put the Mavericks up 5-1 with his second goal of the season.  His low shot from the top of the faceoff circle found the net just inside the far post.

Northern added a goal from Reed Seckel late in the third.

The Mavericks outshot the Wildcats, 41-13, allowing them only one shot in the first period to tie a school record for fewest shots in a period.

Montpetit, White, Sustr and Young each finished with a goal and an assist.  John Faulkner made 11 saves to earn his second win of the year and the 40th of his career.
